Chinese Envoy Meets Kim Jong Il in Pyongyang


NORTH KOREA: A Chinese envoy has met North Korean leader Kim Jong Il in Pyongyang to discuss the international crisis over the north's nuclear weapons test. A foreign ministry spokesman said the envoy (former foreign minister Tang Jiaxuan) handed a personal message from President Hu Jintao to the North Korean leader today (Thursday). He gave no details on the note.

CHINA ECONOMY: China's Nationa;l Bureau of Statistics says the country's economic growth slowed in the third quarter of this year, a sign that efforts to prevent the economy from overheating are in effect.

IRAQ: Iraqi police say two bomb attacks in northern Iraq have killed at least 19 people. Police say a blast in Kirku today killed 8 people, while a suicide truck bomber hit a police station in Mosul, killing at least 11 people and wounding 25 others.

BURMA-PRISONER: The United States say it is "deeply troubled" by the death in Burma of jailed pro-democracy activist Thet Win Aung. In a statement Wednesday, the U.S. State Department said the death shows the tragic price the people of Burma are forced to pay for opposing Burma's repressive policies and seeking human and democratic rights.
