Laos Today: Thai Police Arrest More Hmongs from Laos

Thai authorities said today(Wednesday) that they have arrested 231 Hmongs from Laos who have recently entered the country illegally. The arrest was made on Monday, June 5.

Officials said the new group of Hmongs had crossed the border into Loei Province from Xanakham on the Laos side, then rode a bus to Phetchaboun Province to join their relatives in Ban Houei Nam Khao, where over 6,000 Hmongs from Laos have been living in makeshift shelters along the road since the summer of 2005 when they were evicted from a refugee camp in Khao Kho district.

VOA Bangkok stringer Songrit PhonNgern reports that there are currently 263 Hmongs from Laos being detained by Thai police, including a group of 32 Hmongs who were arrested in late 2005. Another group of 27 was arrested and sent back to Laos where they remain missing.
